There are three main theories of hookah origination and invention.
Persian
Scientists believe that water pipe smoking was first practiced by the Persians, Indians, and other peoples as an anesthetic in the 16th century. The most well-known names of hookah have Persian roots. The first Indian water pipes had a rather elementary structure and were made of coconut shells of Narcil palm. That is why it is named "Narghile" in some countries. Hookahs spread to North Africa and Europe in the 17th century and became very popular. In the 20th century, hookah smoking began to decline in popularity in many parts of the world. However, it has experienced a resurgence in recent years, particularly among young people.
African
Archeologists working in the countries of Tanzania, Kenya, and Zambia have made an interesting discovery- a number of hashish pipes that are believed to date back to the 14th century. These ancient devices share many similarities with modern hookah pipes, leading scientists to believe that they may have served as prototypes for the hookahs we use today. The discovery of these pipes provides valuable insight into the history of this popular smoking device. It also raises questions about the origins of hookah smoking and the reasons why this practice has remained popular for centuries. Despite centuries of change, it seems that hookahs continue to hold a special place in the hearts of smokers around the world.
American
A new study by American researchers has found that American Indians used pumpkins for smoking. They passed the smoke through it, using it as a water vase. There is a theory that this smoking method then spread to Africa, which happened long before the discovery of the American continent. This theory is based on the fact that African cultures have a tradition of using hookahs, which are similar to the pumpkin smoking method. In addition, there are many similarities between hookahs and pumpkin smoking pipes, including the way they are used and the way they look. The findings of this study suggest that hookahs may have originated in America, long before they were introduced to Africa.
